What's in each unit:
Unit 1 — Why Building Science Matters
The foundation unit. Students learn what building science is, why it matters for modern construction, and how energy, moisture, heat, and air interact in a building assembly.
Unit 2 — Site, Climate and Design
Students explore how site conditions and local climate data drive design decisions — orientation, prevailing winds, solar access, and climate zone classification.
Unit 3 — The Building Enclosure
A deep dive into the building envelope — walls, roofs, foundations, and how they work together as a system to control heat, air, and moisture.
Unit 4 — Water Management
Covers bulk water, capillary action, and vapor — the three forms of moisture that damage buildings. Includes drainage planes, flashing details, and WRB installation.
Unit 5 — Air Sealing
The most hands-on unit. Students learn air barrier theory, common leakage locations, sealing strategies, and conduct a full blower door pressurization lab.
Unit 6 — Thermal Performance and Insulation
R-values, thermal bridging, continuous insulation, and insulation types. Students learn to calculate assembly performance and specify insulation for climate zones.
Unit 7 — Windows, Doors and Glazing
U-factor, SHGC, condensation resistance, and rough opening details. Students evaluate window specs and learn how glazing affects heating and cooling loads.
Unit 8 — Mechanical Systems and Ventilation
HVAC fundamentals, Manual J overview, duct design basics, and the critical relationship between tight construction and mechanical ventilation strategies.
Unit 9 — Indoor Air Quality and Materials
VOCs, source control, filtration, and ventilation rates. Students learn how building materials and systems affect occupant health and IAQ performance.
Unit 10 — Putting It All Together
The capstone unit. Students apply everything from Units 1–9 to analyze a real or hypothetical building, complete a performance assessment, and present their findings.
